The woman had been kept hostage for 10 years by the man, along with two other women.
The night she went missing
As a teenager in Cleveland, Ohio, Amanda Berry had landed a job at a local Burger King. On the night of April 21st, 2003, just a day before she turned 17, she unexpectedly vanished from her job and home.
Her mother listed her as a missing person and fought off the reports and media coverage, claiming that the teenager had run away from home.
Unfortunately, Louwana Miller, Amanda berry’s mother died while her daughter was still missing.
The day she cried for help
On the evening of May 6th, 2013, over a decade after Berry was declared missing, she managed to make contact with people outside the home of her abductor.
The young woman appeared on the door of the 2207 Seymour Avenue house, screaming for help along with her 6-year old daughter. Luckily, she managed to capture the attention of two neighbors – Angelo Cordero and Charles Ramsay, who managed to break into the home and get Amanda Berry and her child out to safety.
Berry hid nearby and finally called 911, claiming that she is Amanda Berry, who was kidnapped and missing for 10 years, and that she is free once again.
When the Cleveland police arrived to get her, they saved two other women – Michele Knight and Gina Dejesus, who were also declared missing years ago and were held captive by Ariel Castro.
She gets reunited with her family
Both Berry and Dejesus were reunited with their families on May 8th, 2013. Berry’s sister Beth Serrano, thanked well-wishers in her public statement on that same day. Knight remained hospitalized for longer.
A special Cleveland Courage Fund was set up to provide resources to support the three victims of kidnapping.
Castro gets arrested
Reportedly, Castro had kept the three women chained in his basement, without allowing them to leave the property, and abusing and raping them continuously.
During her captivity, Castro got Berry pregnant, and she had a daughter Jocelyn who was held in captivity as well. Tests performed after the escape has proven that Castro was the father of the child.
Castro’s siblings were arrested too, but later released without any charges.
Eventually, Ariel Castro was formerly accused of kidnapping Berry, Knight, and Dejesus in the period of 2002 and 2004, and for keeping them hostage in his property in Cleveland, until Berry managed to get help and to escape alongside the other hostages and her child.
In May 2013, Castro was indicted for 329 charges, including 139 counts of rape and 177 counts of kidnapping, two counts of aggravating murder for forcing the women to have abortions.
During the investigation, Castro was being held on bail for $8 million.
Ariel Castro in prison
In July 2013, Ariel Castro pleaded guilty to the kidnapping and rape charges for the three women. He entered a plea to avoid the death penalty.
He was sentenced to life in prison plus 1,000 years and no right of parole on August 1st, 2013.
Although Amanda Berry did not attend the hearing when the sentence was announced, fellow victim Michele Knight was present, and prior to the announcement of the sentence for her abuser claimed, “I spent 11 years of hell. Now your hell is just beginning.”
Berry’s sister Beth Serrano was at the hearing and explained to the press that her sister did not want to talk about the abuse, and was focusing only on protecting her daughter.
On September 3rd, 2013, Ariel Castro was found dead in his prison cell, having hung himself with a bedsheet.
