The internet is a world of possibilities. It honestly places no limits on what you can sell. Whether it’s the Nyan Cat or their grandmothers, people have sold it all. What’s even more confounding is how people lap up these goods and how quickly they fly off the metaphorical shelves! But if you thought haunted rubber ducks and ghosts in jars were the weirdest things to be sold online, you’ve got another thing coming.
Meet Belle Delphine, the 19-year-old gamer and cosplayer who very recently took the online market by storm, racking up figures that could teach Walmart a thing or two about sales. What did she sell? Her bottled bathwater. Yes, you read that right. No, reading it again isn’t going to change it.
Who Is She?
Born Belle Kirschner, Belle Delphine initial claim to fame were her provocative photos and videos on social media platforms such as Instagram and Snapchat. Not much is known about the 19-year-old’s personal life, except that she was born in South Africa, now resides in the good city of London, and seems to have a fondness for cats and hamsters.
Before becoming an internet sensation, Delphine has stated that she waitressed at restaurants, was a babysitter, and also worked at a coffee shop. Prior to her Instagram ban (for nudity and pornography), the cosplayer had 4.5 million followers on the platform, lapping up her photos, videos, and ahegao expressions and around 4000 patrons on Patreon.
Delphine’s Claim to Fame
Just like every famous person had to start somewhere small, Belle Delphine started her internet career with a few standard make-up tutorials that she posted on YouTube way back in 2016. Though these videos attracted more than 9 million views and over 460,000 subscriptions, it took two years and apparently a lot of soul-searching and introspection (one assumes) for Delphine to embrace her “weird elf kitty girl” self (as she puts it).
Post-2018, Delphine rose to fame with photos of her in lingerie, hair color that changed as often as Leonardo di Caprio’s romantic partners, sexy stockings, cosplay, and most importantly, her “ahegao”. Basically, most things PG-13 or higher and definitely NSFW. Eventually, this progressed to videos of her doing stunts most of us can’t fathom the logic behind, such as eating a raw egg seductively and putting up pictures of a dead octopus with fake eyes on it.
Bottled Bathwater? Say What?
Anyway, ever since, all eyes have been on the model, with some people claiming they got herpes from the product and some others looking to capitalize on the product’s fame by selling things as preposterous as the results of Delphine’s Mother-Nature-calls. Yep, her pee, good citizens of this weird and wonderful planet, for a mere $9999! Either way, what started as a $30-per-jar prank translated to a cool estimated $500,000, letting Delphine laugh all the way to her bank. (Just in case you were wondering, her bathwater didn’t have herpes in it.)
In addition to patrons and Snapchat and YouTube premium subscribers, Belle Delphine makes her income from providing exclusive access to her photos, which are available at $50 a month. Her membership structure on Patreon starts at a dollar a month, going all the way up to $2500 a month. The higher the membership fee, the racier the pictures. She also seems to have an online store that sells posters, mousepads, chewed gum, bathwater (which is now $250 a jar) and pee.
Delphine has tricked her fans before, saying she’d make a PornHub account (whose latest campaign for clean beaches you should totally check out, by the way) if a certain photo garnered more than a million likes. Though the likes doubled the amount expected, the gamer girl fooled fans by putting up 12 videos with racy puns (such as Belle Delphine Gets Scissored, a video of her cutting paper using a pair of scissors). Talk about raising expectations and crashing hopes. Hearts sunk like the Titanic around the world, but not her popularity, which just kept soaring.
