Is hot glue any good?

The hot melt adhesive (known as hot glue) is a thermoplastic adhesive, sold as solid cylindrical sticks to be used with hot glue guns. The gun uses a continuous-duty heating element to melt the plastic cylinder and then the glue is pushed through the nozzle by a mechanical trigger or a propulsion device.

This happens at temperatures around 300-380F, and the gue initially is hot enough to blister and scald the operator’s skin seriously. The glue bonds reasonably quickly (60 sec. or less) and solidify.

There are quite a lot of brands and types of glue sticks, each with its distinctive features, depending on the used materials. Usually, the transparent glue stick allows for a weaker bond than the colored one; there are also high-adhesive ones that give strong bonding even at lower temperatures.

There are also decorative glue sticks with different colors and glitter. Most often, the low-temperature glue sticks are made of EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) copolymers, and their use is limited because of the low creep under load ratio.

Ethylene-acrylate copolymers are used for a stronger bond and higher operational temperatures; some of those offer very high performance. Other materials for specific needs include polyolefines, high-performance polyamides polyesters, thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), and many others.

Many of the hot gun glue manufacturers offer glue gun kit compositions with different types of HMA sticks to suit the needs o the users.

Is the hot glue better than regular glue?

Many are the cases when you don’t want to use nails and screws for repairs or just DIY projects, or it’s simply not possible to take a heavy tool to the decorations’ process. There are situations when the different regular glues won’t do with fabrics or even paper.

Are you a woodworker? A DIY contest participant? A mini hot glue gun can be used even by kids for crafting; the full size gun is irreplaceable for all home repair projects. Because of the temperature settings – the volatile organic compounds are eliminated, and there is no drying or curing to slow down the process.

At home, the hot glue’s best advantage is its versatility and the ease of bonding wood, metal, everything that can stand up to heat.

Usually, the solidified hot glue doesn’t lose its bonding abilities with the time, so – short of applying high temperatures in the glued parts – the crafted and repaired items will stay securely whole.

While regular glues have their uses, some industries, for example, rely solely on HMA (hot melt adhesive) use:

For instance, bookbinding, laminating applications in woodworking, electronic device manufacturing and isolation, production of disposable diapers and gluing of paperboard cartons and boxes (and, of course, many others, sometimes surprising uses of the HMA).

What to look for when choosing a hot glue gun?

The first and most important question you’ll have to answer is: What you plan using this gun for?

The mini size hot glue gun comes in lower wattage and lower working temperature (20, 25 or 30W) and is compatible with smaller in size and diameter sticks. While some of the brands use high-adhesive materials that give good bonding on lower temperatures, most such minis are designed for crafting and hobby use.

Still, you would like your temperature glue gun to have at least a power switch (preferably with a LED light), a precise trigger feed mechanism, and a wire stand so to have control over the melted glue flow even while not in use. You can find some stand-up base guns on the market as well.

The mini guns are, as a rule, less durable than the full size hot glue guns. The full size hot glue gun models (60, 80, or 100W) are made to operate longer and have a stronger heater component, so a weaker plastic corpus will deform or even set on fire.

Thus the full size guns usually heat up slower than the minis but reach higher temperatures and have to be made from fire-retardant materials. The glue output also has to be handled differently due to the bigger diameter sticks used.

Many of the full size models have an aluminum or copper nozzle, or a copper tip. From your full-sized gun, you’d also like a safer grip, maybe even a rubber handle and additional safety features like a fuse, for example.

Both minis and full-sized glue guns are made with dual temp settings – two modes’ controls (20/30W or 60/10W respectively), so the temperature adjustments may allow for precision and variety of use for different kinds of home improvements and projects, and better results in different environments.

The corded hot glue guns are using uninterrupted heating technology but are limited within the length of their cords (usually 4.5 or 5 ft.) The so-called cordless hot glue guns are of two types:

Hot glue gun with a power base and a limited working time off the charging base. Those models melt the glue with the residual heat the heater element makes; they should be returned to their stand shortly to reheat.

The other type is a cordless glue gun with a battery attached that allows for longer working times and constant flow of glue.

While using your hot glue gun, never forget those are hazardous tools and should be operated with care; keep your job site clean and don’t allow hot melted glue to drip and create a mess or to burn your hand during application.
