About Doreen Lioy
Born in Burbank, California, United States, Lioy is best known for being the former wife of serial killer Richard Ramirez. A magazine editor, Lioy met Ramirez many years after he was sent to prison and communicated with his through letters. The relationship remained under the limelight for several years because of its unusual nature.
There is not much information about Lioy’s life and educational background. Similarly, there is not much information available about her previous family life or parents. It was rumored that her family disowned her because they weren’t particularly thrilled about her relationship with Ramirez.
She later said in an interview that she knew she would not have a family of her own. She added that she never cared about what others thought about her marriage to Ramirez and said that she did get support from some quarters who appreciated her courage.
The couple was married through 1996-2013 until Ramirez died of natural causes. They had been separated since 2010.
Ramirez, the Killer
Dubbed ‘Night Stalker’ because of his night crimes and home invasions, Ramirez quickly gained notoriety. The murder spree started shortly in 1984 where a 79-year-old victim was found stabbed multiple times in Glassell Park, Los Angeles. Ramirez did nothing for one year, making authorities assume that it was a one-off case.
But the killings started again in March 1985, when 2 victims were found dead with gunshot wounds to the head. Ramirez bound the second victim’s wife and asked her where the valuables were kept. The wife somehow got free and attacked him with a shotgun she found in the house, but unfortunately, it was unloaded. Ramirez first shot her to death and then proceeded to mutilate her body with a carving knife he found in the kitchen. He gouged her eyes out and carried them with him in a box, according to several reports.
A month later, Ramirez attacked another couple. He shot the husband to death and raped the wife before ransacking the house and fleeing. The killing spree continued throughout the year until August 1985, sometimes just days apart. To mislead the police, he would often draw pentagrams at the scenes of the crimes. The police were baffled because of the random nature of the killings and the fact that the brutality of the murders changed with each one.
Finally, on August 30, 1985, Ramirez was chased and caught by a mob in East Los Angeles and proceeded to beat him until the police arrived. Finally, he was caught and the people of Los Angeles breathed easy. He had identified on the basis of a thumbprint he had left in a car he had stolen. In all, he was convicted of 11 sexual assaults and 13 murders.
Doreen and Ramirez
She had said in an interview that the minute she saw his mugshot on the TV, she noticed something “captivating” in his eyes which made her reach out to him.
Ramirez proposed to her in 1998, and the courtship continued for the next 9 years. The two got married in 1996 at the San Quentin State Prison in California. Throughout their courtship, Lioy believed that Ramirez was innocent. She even went on to say that she would commit suicide if Ramirez was executed. But it turned out that even if he were to be executed, he would have been well in his 70s.
Meanwhile, Doreen busied herself with appeals to reduce Ramirez’s sentence and appeared in many interviews and talk shows. Her experience of being a magazine editor also helped. Most notable of these are Biography and THS Investigates Love Behind Bars. She maintained all this while that Ramirez was innocent.
The long romance was coming to an end and the couple was drifting apart. The exact details of why this happened are not clear, but it is said that after it was confirmed that he indeed raped and murdered the 9-year-old girl (confirmed by a DNA sample), Lioy started distancing herself from him. There is another section of people who believes that in his final years, Ramirez was diagnosed with hepatitis-C, and it is a transmittable disease, so Lioy did not want to be with him anymore.
But the most popular belief is that until the end, Ramirez did not feel any remorse for any of the crimes he committed and that was the principal reason behind the separation. There is another possibility that he may have told Lioy things that he hadn’t told anyone and that finally broke the illusion.
Doreen Lioy Now
As staunchly she stood by him for years, Doreen faded away from the limelight once she distanced herself from Ramirez. After being on death row for more than 23 years, Ramirez died of complications related to B-cell lymphoma on June 7, 2013. He was 53. Lioy did not come to claim his body, which was eventually cremated by the authorities.
Lioy’s whereabouts now are unknown. In previous interviews, she had said that her family had broken all ties with her and she wasn’t close to Ramirez’s family members either. As of now, Lioy has completely vanished from the public eye.
