Born on 15 January 1978, Jamie Clayton is an American model and actress. Clayton is best known for her role as Naomi Marks in the original series by Netflix, Sense8, and also for the role in the 3rd season of Designated Survivor, where she played the role of Sasha Booker.
Early Life and Career
Jamie Clayton was born in San Diego, California, and her father, Howard Clayton is a criminal defense attorney and Shelley, Jamie’s mother is an event planner. Clayton has a sister Toni, and she spent her childhood with her sister and parents in San Diego.
When Jamie was 19 years old, she decided to move to New York City to follow her dreams of being a top-notch makeup artist. However, she ended up on television, and in 2010, she became the co-host on the makeover show of VH1, TRANSform Me. Jamie then became a full-fledged actress and took up several roles in films and on television.
In 2011, Clayton appeared in the 3rd season of the series Hung by HBO, where she featured in the recurrent role of Kyla. She then appeared in the leading role of Michelle Darnell on the interactive series, Dirty Work that won an Emmy Award, in 2012, alongside actors Hank Harris and Mary Lynn Rajskub. In the television series, Are We There Yet? Clayton appeared in the role of Carla Favers. Clayton narrated the audiobook for George, a novel for young adults, which is about a young transgender girl.
Clayton then appeared in the Netflix original series, Sense8, where she was one of the 8 main characters. The series premiered on Netflix on 5 June 2015. In the series, Clayton played the role of a transgender female, Nomi Marks, who is a hacker and political blogger, along with Daryl Hannah, Tina Diesel and Valeria Bilello. Clayton said that she was extremely keen on Sense8 because of the opportunity it gave her to play a transgender role, which was written, as well as directed by the transgender filmmaker, Lana Wachowski.
In 2016, Clayton made her debut on the big screen and featured in the film The Neon Demon, where she appeared alongside Keanu Reeves, Christina Hendrick, Jena Malone and Elle Fanning. In the same year, Clayton appeared in the TV drama series Motive, where she featured as Avery Bowman. She appeared in The Snowman, a thriller movie, in 2017 alongside Michael Fassbender, where she played the role of Edda. She also starred in The Chain, along with John Patrick Amedori and Madeline Zima and also Mass Effect: Andromeda in 2017. Clayton played the role of Sasha Booker in the 3rd season of the Netflix original series, Designated Survivor in 2019.
Life as a Transgender
When you look as stunning as Jamie Clayton, it is practically impossible to imagine that she was male earlier — she is a transgender. Before Clayton became famous as an actress, she attended many auditions for transgender roles; however, she was turned down each time because she did not look like one. Clayton took acting lessons for gay actors, which helped her with her roles.
Clayton grew up as a boy and in 2003, she underwent surgery outside Tucson to transform completely into a woman. The surgery was performed by Dr. Toby Meltzer and lasted for around 6 hours. Since her transition, Clayton continued to act as a spokesperson for other people of the LGBT community who do not have the courage to be open about their sexual orientation.
Clayton is extremely proud of who she is. When Clayton got the opportunity to play the role of a transgender character in Sense8, she used the opportunity to demonstrate who she really is. Apart from belonging to the LGBT community, Clayton works a lot to support the members of the community and inspiring them to be proud of who they are. She also promotes her cause by her active presence on social media platforms. Clayton was honored by the Out Magazine, an LGBTQ fashion and entertainment magazine, in 2011 as a part of the annual “Out 100” awards.

In 2015, there were rumors in the media that Clayton was in a relationship with Keanu Reeves, the Matrix star. However, both Clayton and Reeves remained tight-lipped and neither confirmed nor denied the affair. But later on, media new sites confirmed that they were seeing each other. According to Star Magazine, in 2015, it was rumored that Clayton and Reeves met on the sets of Neon Demon and got to know one another.
