About Roger Miklos
Roger Miklos (nee Roger Lee Miklos) was born in Summerland Key, Florida on January 6, 1941, and he grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. He is of Caucasian ethnicity and an American national. Roger is renowned as a reality TV celebrity and a treasure hunter, who featured in the TV series, Cooper’s Treasure. The series follows the life of Roger’s son Darrell who explores and is on a quest to discover the shipwrecks photographed originally from space by astronaut Gordon Cooper, who took pictures of anomalies across the Caribbean Coast while on his missions 50 years ago in the hope to discover the secrets of the sea.
Roger is well known as a treasure and shipwreck hunter. Before embarking on a career of treasure hunting, he had a career as a police officer in Reno, Nevada. He began his career as a police officer in the 1970s. Roger also worked in Lake Arrowhead in California and along with the DEA, he worked in Nassau, Bahamas.
Roger then became interested in hunting for treasure. He had traveled quite a lot through the Florida Keys; however, to be closer to the treasures he wanted to find, Roger moved from California to Key West with his wife Sheila in 2007. However, when Hurricane Irma struck, his plans were spoiled and the couple lost their belongings, forcing them to look for a more affordable housing option.
With the knowledge Roger had from reading treasure books, he set out to the ocean with metal detectors to search for coins. The scorching sun and the humidity of Florida’s summer started taking a toll on the young man and Roger suffered blistered feet on the hot sands of the beach and slowly the other treasure hunters left Roger alone.
This was when Roger met Kip Wagner, an ex-carpenter, turned treasure hunter and Roger’s life took a turn. Wagner had also roamed the beaches of Florida for over 7 years before he discovered El Capitan, a wreck in an isolated cove in 8 feet of water in 1958. Wagner was impressed by Roger’s determination and work and offered him a job and Roger became a professional treasure hunter.
Through the 1970s, Roger specialized in exploring sites of shipwrecks. Roger and Wagner also went on a mission to salvage 1715 Fleet.
Roger made several discoveries when he was alive and recovered artifacts from ships like Atocha, which was lost and sank in the ocean in 1622. It is estimated that the ship was lost with a cargo of around $60 million. Roger stated that the job of treasure hunting was “not at all romantic” and in fact, a large part of it was dangerous and unpleasant work.
The main problem was that the water in the Florida Keys area was quite warm and, in the summertime, the team had to dive into the waters with ice cubes in their swim vests in order to keep the body temperature down, otherwise there is the danger of dehydrating under the water because of sweating. Although Roger faced several dangers as a treasure hunter, he still loved it.
